Course Objectives

• To analyze the evolutionary stages of architecture from the mid-nineteenth century to today in relation to the political, socio-economic and cultural milieu of time,• To comprehend the role of an architect in the historical sense,• To outline the various architectural trends by highlighting its most representative works,• To raise awareness about the architectural theories, philosophy and culture of the period and to establish a ground for the critical understanding.

Course Content

The course examines architectural and urban history from the mid-19th century to the present from multiple perspectives. Periods are introduced through social, economic, cultural, and geographic contexts; institutions; settlement patterns; building typologies; construction techniques; and major developments. Arts and traditions related to architecture are also covered. The course provides a broad geographical perspective, and students are encouraged to perform comparative analyses between periods and movements to explore relationships between historical examples
