Course Objectives

To provide students with fundamental knowledge and practical skills regarding the principles, physiological effects, indications and contraindications of therapeutic massage and classical massage techniques, and to develop competence in planning and performing safe and appropriate massage applications on different body regions.

Course Content

Basic principles and physiological effects of therapeutic massage; indications and contraindications; patient positioning and therapist ergonomics; classical massage manipulations; massage applications for the upper and lower extremities, back, lumbar region, neck, shoulder, thorax, abdomen and face; sports massage; massage approaches in special conditions; clinical case assessment; and planning and implementation of massage sessions.

Learning Outcomes

LO1 Explains the basic principles, physiological effects, indications, and contraindications of therapeutic massage.
LO2 Applies patient positioning, therapist ergonomics, hygiene, privacy, and safety principles in massage practice.
LO3 Performs the basic manipulations of classical massage using appropriate technique, direction, pressure, and rhythm.
LO4 Performs classical and sports massage applications for different body regions according to individual needs.
LO5 Assesses individuals for massage application in clinical cases, selects appropriate massage techniques, plans and performs the massage session, and evaluates the post-application response.

4 Basic Manipulations and Application Principles of Classical Massage: Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Tapotement/Percussion and Vibration
5 Lower Extremity Massage Applications I: Thigh and Knee Region
6 Lower Extremity Massage Applications II: Leg, Ankle and Foot
7 Upper Extremity Massage Applications: Shoulder, Arm, Elbow, Forearm, Wrist and Hand
8 Midterm Examination
9 Back, Lumbar Region, Neck and Shoulder Girdle Massage Applications
10 Thoracic, Abdominal and Facial Massage Applications
11 Fascia: Structure, Functions, Assessment and Basic Principles of Fascial Applications
