Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand asepsis, antisepsis and sterile surgical practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery, recognize common surgical diseases and indications; prepare the patient, surgical field, sterile set and surgical table; identify instruments, devices and materials used in extraction, surgical extraction, infection drainage, biopsy, trauma, implant and sinus lift procedures; and provide effective assistance before, during and after surgery.

Course Content

This course covers surgical clinic organization and assistant duties; asepsis, antisepsis, surgical sterilization, hand antisepsis, sterile gowning and sterile set-opening rules; patient evaluation and operative field preparation; local anesthesia equipment; simple and surgical extraction; flap elevation, bone removal and tooth sectioning; suturing, hemostasis and postoperative care; odontogenic infections, cysts and lesions; biopsy and specimen management; maxillofacial trauma and splinting; dental implant surgery; implant sets, motor, drills and torque; bone grafts, membranes, PRF and sinus lift; surgical complications and quality assurance.

LO4 Explains the stages of implant and sinus lift surgery and the purposes of implant motors, drill sets, implant components, grafts and membranes.
LO5 Applies four-handed assistance, preservation of the sterile field, specimen handling, documentation, postoperative instructions and team support during complications.

Weekly Course Content

Week Content
1 Introduction to the Surgical Clinic: Scope, common surgical diseases, assistant duties, patient safety and surgical records.
2 Asepsis and Sterile Practice: Importance of sterilization, surgical hand antisepsis, hand gloving, opening packs and sets, and maintenance of the sterile field.
3 Patient and Session Preparation: Review of history, imaging and tests; positioning, suction, irrigation, local anesthetics, syringe, needles and oral condition preparation.
4 Simple Extraction Session: Elevators, forceps, periodontal elevators, curettes, suction, gauze and hemostatic materials; assistance before, during and after extraction.
5 Surgical Extraction and Impacted Teeth: Flap set, scalpel blades, periosteal elevators, surgical handpieces, burs, irrigation, bone removal, tooth sectioning and suturing materials.
6 Suturing, Hemostasis and Postoperative Care: Needle holders, forceps, scissors, sutures, local hemostatics and drains; suture removal, prescriptions and patient instructions.
7 Odontogenic Infections, Cysts and Biopsy: Abscess and cellulitis; incision-drainage sets, drains and suction; cyst surgery, biopsy instruments, specimen containers and specimen management.
8 Midterm Exam
9 Maxillofacial Trauma and Minor Surgery: Soft-tissue injuries, alveolar and jaw fractures, splinting, wire, composite, sutures and dressing materials.
10 Dental Implant Surgery: Patient and sterile field preparation, implant components, motor, drill sequence, drivers, torque, irrigation and primary stability.
11 Implant Surgery Sessions and Materials: One- and two-stage surgery, cover screws, healing abutments, surgical guides, measurements, records and postoperative follow-up.
12 Bone Augmentation, Grafts and Sinus Lift: Grafts, membranes, elevation screws, piezosurgery, osteotomes, sinus lift kits, lateral and crestal approaches and PRF preparation.
13 Surgical Complications and Quality Assurance: Bleeding, alveolitis, oroantral communication, infection, nerve injury and implant complications; team approach, waste management, specimen management, documentation and session-end organization.
14 Final Exam
