Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to enable students to classify dental instruments, devices and materials according to risk; explain the processing steps from chairside use to sterile storage; manage sterilization units and procedures; evaluate sterilization methods and biological, chemical and physical controls; and safely perform maintenance, cleaning, disinfection and sterilization procedures of dental instruments and materials in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

Course Content

This course covers the classification of dental instruments and materials according to the Spaulding classification; pre-treatment, safe collection and transport, manual, ultrasonic and automated cleaning methods, rinsing, drying, inspection, maintenance, lubrication, packaging and labeling; dirty-clean-sterile workflow in the sterilization unit; autoclave operating principles, cycle and loading rules; physical, chemical and biological sterilization controls; maintenance and sterilization of air turbines, micromotors, handpieces, rotary instruments and dental units; appropriate storage conditions for dental materials, inventory management, sharps safety and waste management.

LO1 Classifies dental instruments, devices and materials according to intended use, infection risk and manufacturer instructions and selects the appropriate reprocessing method.
LO2 Explains and performs pre-treatment, transport, cleaning, rinsing, drying, inspection, maintenance, packaging and labeling from chairside use to sterile storage.
LO3 Explains dirty-clean-sterile workflow, autoclave principles, cycle and loading rules, routine maintenance, and physical, chemical and biological monitoring methods.
LO4 Explains manufacturer-based maintenance, lubrication, disinfection and sterilization procedures for air turbines, micromotors, handpieces, rotary instruments and dental units.
LO5 Stores sterile products and dental materials under appropriate temperature, humidity and light conditions and applies shelf-life, inventory, documentation, sharps safety and waste management principles.

11 Dental Unit and Equipment Maintenance: Maintenance and disinfection of dental units, suction, water and air systems
