Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the role and importance of technology, innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship in economics. The course aims to examine Schumpeter’s perspectives on technical and technological change, as well as contemporary theories of innovation, in order to explain the relationship between innovation processes, firm behaviour, and economic development. It also seeks to help students analyze the historical experiences of leading industrialized countries over the last two centuries and technological developments in selected industrial sectors within a historical and theoretical framework.

Course Content

This course covers the concepts of technology, innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship within an economic framework. The course includes Schumpeter’s theories of technical and technological change, theories of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship in small businesses and family firms, the Industrial Revolution, the rise of science-related technology, the age of electricity and steel, innovations in oil, chemicals, and synthetic materials, mass production and the automobile, electronics and computers, success and failure in industrial innovation, innovation and firm size, firm strategies, national systems of innovation, technology and economic growth, innovation and international trade performance, and the diffusion of technology.

3 Theories of Entrepreneurship: The main theoretical approaches to entrepreneurship and their conceptual framework are examined.
4 Theories of Entrepreneurship: Different theories of entrepreneurship are evaluated comparatively.

7 The Age of Electricity and Steel – Innovations in Oil, Chemicals, and Synthetic Materials: The transformations created by technological change in new sectors are evaluated.

13 Technology and Economic Growth / Presentations: The relationship between technological progress and economic growth is discussed.
14 Innovation and International Trade Performance – Development and the Diffusion of Technology / Presentations: The effect of innovation on trade performance and the diffusion of technology are examined.
15 General Review: The theories, waves of technological change, and innovation processes covered throughout the course are reviewed in an integrated way.
