Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to enable students to learn the characteristics of healthy newborns and healthy newborn follow-up, recognize health problems and high-risk conditions occurring during the neonatal period, perform appropriate care and practices, and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to refer newborns to appropriate healthcare facilities when necessary.

Course Content

This course covers the characteristics and follow-up of healthy newborns, physical assessment of the newborn, postnatal adaptation and care, newborn screening programs, high-risk newborns and health problems, common neonatal diseases, newborn-specific care and practices, neonatal nutrition, pain management, prevention of infections, parents’ information and care needs, and the recognition, assessment, and referral of newborns requiring midwifery intervention.
