Course Content
Architectural Design VIII studio explores the theme “The Commons of the Derelict” by focusing on how abandoned or underused urban areas can be re-read as spaces of public potential. Instead of viewing dereliction as a sign of loss or failure, the studio frames it as an opportunity to question how collective life, social interaction, and new forms of publicness might emerge from neglect. Students will investigate its physical conditions, everyday uses, and the actions that take place within and around it. Special attention will be given to the sites’ relations with its broader urban and social context, its current state of inactivity, and the informal or temporary practices that shape it. Through mapping, documentation, and representational exercises, students will analyze how the site embodies both absence and possibility. The studio will encourage speculative thinking and critical design proposals that aim to reveal and enhance the site’s capacity to act as a common ground. By re-imagining its role in the urban fabric, students will discuss how derelict places can be transformed into meaningful public spaces through architectural approaches.
