Course Objectives

The overall course objectives are: To give basic knowledge with respect to the types of cultural heritage, to introduce conservation methods employed in the field of preservation of historic resources such as monuments and sites, to offer the students awareness of the different approaches to conservation and restoration of cultural heritage over time, to introduce modern theory of conservation and international conservation doctrine.

Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge of different types of cultural heritage, to introduce methods for the conservation of historic environments such as monuments and sites, and to develop awareness of various approaches to the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage over time. The course also aims to strengthen students’ theoretical background by introducing modern conservation theory as well as international principles and doctrines of heritage conservation.

Course Content

This course aims to provide students, at the beginning of the term, with a general framework on the fundamental concepts and methods related to the investigation, documentation, and recording of historic buildings and sites; it subsequently introduces the field of cultural heritage conservation in a comprehensive manner and seeks to equip students with the theoretical and methodological background necessary for advanced studies in this area. As a multidisciplinary field that has developed over many years, cultural heritage conservation is addressed through the interaction of diverse bodies of knowledge, and within the scope of the course, contemporary approaches, fundamental principles, and the main issues shaping current conservation practices are examined within a holistic framework.
