Course Objectives

The studio guides students to explore spatial experience, context, user, function, scale, and formal composition, while critically engaging with underutilized urban abandoned areas and their relationships within the urban fabric. Within the project site located in Antalya’s Haşim İşcan neighborhood, students are expected to investigate the transformation potential of inner-city abandoned areas and develop programmatic proposals based on the concept of hospitality, determining the specific functions themselves and questioning how these programs can integrate with the neighborhood context. Throughout the studio, iterative design processes will encourage students to examine strategies connecting Antalya’s urban identity, cultural narratives, and landscape, while testing diverse design approaches and developing a critical understanding of architectural representation in the regeneration of neglected urban spaces

Course Content

This studio explores hospitality as a spatial framework for reactivating underutilized urban areas in Antalya’s Haşim İşcan neighborhood. Rather than approaching hospitality as a predefined building typology, the course examines it as a strategy for negotiating thresholds, inclusion, and urban encounter. Students will design a hospitality-oriented building of 1000–1200 m² grounded in a layered site analysis structured around physical-spatial and relational dimensions. Through the investigation of topography, environmental conditions, existing urban fabric, everyday use patterns, boundaries, traces of dereliction, and collective memory, students will develop proposals that respond critically to the site’s material and socio-temporal conditions. Architectural proposals are expected to combine enclosed, semi-open, and open spaces as gradients of hospitality, mediating between public and private realms while engaging Antalya’s urban identity, cultural narratives, and landscape context. Programmatic functions will not be prescribed; instead, they will emerge from the students’ analytical readings and their interpretation of hospitality as a spatial and ethical position within the urban fabric.

2 Presentation about the topic: conceptual framework, literature on abandoned areas, typologies, etc.
3 Workshop 1: Expressions, impressions of the site, preparing cards including collages, sections, sketches, diagrams, visuals, etc., for each study area. Submission of workshop 1 at the end of the class
4 Development of collages and site analysis according to discussions and critiques. Determination of the study area
