Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to help students understand the importance of maternal and fetal health and to provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to identify risky situations related to pregnancy and to carry out appropriate care and interventions for these conditions.

Course Content

This course covers situations and monitoring that may constitute risk factors in midwifery, the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and midwifery care of pathological conditions included in the high-risk pregnancy category, as well as the measures to be taken to enhance the health of the mother and fetus.

Prerequisites / Corequisites

Successfully completing the course coded EBE 201 is a prerequisite for this course.

1 Introduction to the course, sharing of introductions and expectations, Terminology Related to Pregnancy and Health Indicators (Maternal and Infant Mortality Statistics), Risk Factors in Pregnancy.
2 Classification of High-Risk Pregnancies, Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
3 Pregnancy Complications (Miscarriages, Ectopic Pregnancy, Gestational Trophoblastic Diseases, and Midwifery Care).
4 Pregnancy Complications (Placenta Previa, Abruptio Placenta, and Midwifery Care).
5 Pregnancy Complications (Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy and Midwifery Care).
6 Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Caused by Pregnancy, Diabetes and Pregnancy, and Midwifery Care, Amniotic Fluid Anomalies (Polyhydramnios, Oligohydramnios, Embolism).
7 Multiple Pregnancy, Teratogenic Infections (TORCH), Threatened Preterm Labor, Premature Rupture of Membranes, Chorioamnionitis.
8 Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and Intrauterine Fetal Demise, Post-term Pregnancy.
9 Health Issues Affecting Pregnancy - Systemic Diseases and Midwifery Care, Pregnancy and Blood Disorders (Anemia, ABO and Rh Incompatibility)
10 Heart Diseases in Pregnancy, Digestive System Diseases and Pregnancy.
11 Health Issues Affecting Pregnancy (Urinary Infections Caused by Pregnancy and Midwifery Care, Pregnancy and Respiratory System Diseases, Pulmonary Diseases in Pregnancy).
12 Cancer and Pregnancy, Epilepsy and Pregnancy, Thyroid Disorders and Pregnancy, Medications Used in High-Risk Pregnancies and Their Characteristics.
