Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to teach the basic concepts of pharmacology and toxicology.

Course Content

This course covers the basic concepts of pharmacology (sources of drugs, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, toxicology), the therapeutic effects of drugs used in medicine, their mechanisms of action, side effects, and toxic effects.

2 Introduction to pharmacology and toxicology, definitions and general concepts, pharmaceutical forms of drugs, routes of drug administration
3 Absorption and bioavailability of drugs, distribution, and elimination of drugs
4 Drug-receptor relationships and mechanisms of drug action, factors altering drug effects, drug toxicity, general principles in the treatment of acute poisoning
5 Drug interactions, pharmacology of drugs passing into breast milk
6 Chemotherapeutic agents
7 Pharmacology of the autonomic system (Parasympathomimetic drugs, parasympatholytic drugs, sympathomimetic drugs, sympatholytic drugs)
8 Respiratory system drugs
9 Pharmacology of the central nervous system (central nervous system stimulants, drug dependence and abuse, opioid analgesics, antipsychotic drugs)
10 Gastrointestinal system drugs
11 Cardiovascular system drugs
12 Pharmacology of the endocrine system (estrogens, progestogens, oral contraceptives, insulin, oral hypoglycemic drugs, antithyroid drugs)
13 Analgesic and anesthetic drugs
14 Drug abuse and substance dependence
