Course Objectives

It is aimed to have the knowledge of planning and conducting research in the field of health, choosing appropriate statistical methods for the data obtained and interpreting the results, having the skills to use the necessary statistical package program, appropriate report writing meth-od, footnotes and references, as well as attitudes that have adopted the rules of scientific research ethics.

Weekly Course Content

Week Content
1 Introduction to health research and basic concepts, population, sample, dependent and independent variables, definitions, data types, data collection methods.
2 Types of research in the field of health – Observational and experimental studies (clinical trials) – Experimental designs (parallel, crossover, factorial designs) – Systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
3 Research planning and stages: identifying the research topic, formulating hypotheses, conducting a literature review, determining the appropriate statistical method, interpreting the results, and reporting.
4 Sampling methods and determination of the appropriate sample size.
5 Sources of error in research and prevention methods – Bias and sources of bias, prevention of bias (randomization, blinding, use of control groups, etc.) – Measurement errors (random, systematic, proportional error).
6 Preparation of a scientific research plan/proposal – Reporting of scientific studies and commonly used checklists (CONSORT, PRISMA, etc.).
7 Points to consider in writing and reviewing a scientific article, and the concept of research, biomedical research, research according to its objectives and methods, the historical and ethical milestones of research ethics, the concept of research ethics, scientific and ethical methodology in research, and the fundamental principles of research ethics.
8 Ethical issues in research: laboratory studies, animal experiments, field/epidemiological studies, and fundamental ethical issues in clinical research (interventional and non-interventional).
9 Informed consent, researcher–volunteer (healthy/patient) relationship, research participants, volunteer selection, rights, and volunteers without capacity (vulnerable populations).
10 Use of human biological material for research purposes, research biobanking and ethics, protection of personal data, and privacy.
11 Duties, rights, and responsibilities of the parties involved in research (Researcher, Volunteer, Sponsor, Research Ethics Committee, Contract Research Organization, etc.), ethical issues arising from the researcher–industry relationship, and the duties and responsibilities of Research Ethics Committees.
12 Scientific misconduct, publication ethics violations, authorship issues, biased publication (conflict of interest), and editorial ethics.
