Course Objectives

This course aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts, principles, and analytical tools of macroeconomic theory. It examines the measurement of aggregate economic activity, including output, unemployment, and inflation, and explores the roles of saving, investment, and the financial system in the determination of national income. The course also introduces aggregate demand and aggregate supply analysis, and evaluates the roles of fiscal and monetary policy in promoting macroeconomic stability. In addition, it considers basic open-economy macroeconomic issues such as exchange rates, trade balances, and international capital flows.

Course Content

This course covers the fundamental concepts and analytical tools of macroeconomics. It examines the measurement of macroeconomic performance, unemployment and inflation, saving, investment and the financial system, the interaction between income and expenditure, aggregate demand and aggregate supply analysis, fiscal and monetary policy, and the basic issues of open-economy macroeconomics. The course also addresses exchange rates, external balance, and international capital flows, while relating macroeconomic theory to contemporary policy issues.
