Course Objectives
The main function of clinical biochemistry laboratories is to ensure that the tests required for the diagnosis and treatment of patients work appropriately, and to teach how these biochemical tests should be used and interpreted.
Course Content
This course covers the following topics: Introduction to clinical biochemistry and laboratory procedures; Sample collection and processing; Importance of enzymes in clinical diagnosis; Carbohydrate metabolism disorders; Importance of plasma proteins in clinical diagnosis; Plasma lipids and atherosclerosis; Quality control and standardization in the clinical biochemistry laboratory; Diagnostic laboratory markers of acute myocardial infarction; Liver function tests; Bilirubin metabolism and jaundice; Renal function tests; Endocrinology; Minerals and electrolyte metabolism; Importance of tumor markers in clinical diagnosis; Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biochemistry; and sources of error in biochemistry.
