About the Program
In parallel with the evolving social structure and rising levels of welfare, the increasing awareness of visual health and the growing demand for eyewear have led to the rapid expansion of the optical sector. Today, alongside the rise in the number of optical firms, a significant portion of the sector's volume is comprised of the wholesale of eyeglass lenses and frames, as well as high-tech laboratory services. The process of modernization and professional development within Turkey's optical sector gained momentum in the 1980s. Significant progress has been made toward reaching international standards at every stage, from production to retail and from laboratory studies to practical application. This rapid process of digitalization and innovation within the industry has further highlighted the need for opticians who are experts in their fields, possess high technical skills, and have received academic training.In line with these requirements, at the Higher Education Executive Board Meeting of the Republic of Türkiye Council of Higher Education dated April 14, 2021, the establishment of the Opticianry Program within our Vocational School was approved in accordance with 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880.Education Period and Title: Students who successfully complete the 2-year (Associate Degree) education process consisting of four semesters graduate with the title of "Optician."
Admission and Registration Requirements
Students are admitted to the Opticianry Program through the university entrance examinations organized annually by the Assessment, Selection, and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Candidates are accepted based on their preferences, with the previous year's TYT base scores serving as the primary criterion for placement.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Students are admitted to our program through central placement conducted by ÖSYM, as well as through inter-institutional lateral transfers from domestic and international institutions based on academic merit, and both inter-institutional and intra-institutional lateral transfers based on central placement scores.Students admitted to the Opticianry Program may request the adaptation (credit transfer) of courses they have successfully completed in their previous undergraduate or associate degree programs to our curriculum before completing their enrollment. This request must be submitted via a formal petition to the Vocational School of Health Services at the beginning of the academic year in which the students will commence their studies. Students making such a request must attach the original copy of an official approved transcript to their petition. The adaptation process is carried out within the framework of the principles determined by the Administrative Board of the Vocational School of Health Services and the commissions it appoints. During the adaptation process, course contents and ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) workloads are taken into consideration.
Program Educational Objectives
Program Educational Objective 1: To provide high-level technical skills in the procurement, precision assembly, and optimal application of optical devices, which are of vital importance in the correction of visual impairments.Program Educational Objective 2: To enable students to analyze complex professional problems encountered in sectoral applications by synthesizing theoretical and practical knowledge, and to develop scientifically-based, effective solution strategies by adapting rapidly to changing conditions.Program Educational Objective 3: To instill a sense of professional discipline and awareness of national and international ethical values and legal regulations, ensuring that patient rights and public health are always prioritized during the performance of professional activities.Program Educational Objective 4: To equip students with the ability to establish and manage their own optical establishments by closely following current sectoral trends and market dynamics.
Exams, Assessment and Evaluation
At our university, examinations consist of midterm exams, final exams, make-up exams, exemption exams, additional exams, and single-course exams. Examinations are conducted according to the schedule prepared and announced by the Vocational School of Health Services. Presentation of student ID cards is mandatory to enter the exams. Our university does not implement resit (makeup) exams; instead, a summer school program is available.A midterm exam is an assessment conducted during the semester in which a course in the Vocational School of Health Services associate degree curriculum is offered. At least one midterm exam is held for each course per semester; alternatively, assignments, projects, or similar activities conducted during the course may be used in place of a midterm exam at the discretion of the instructor. The final exam is conducted at the end of the semester during the dates specified in the academic calendar. To be eligible for final exams, a minimum attendance of 70% is required. The grade intervals required for students to be considered successful in a course are presented in the table below.The academic standing of our students is determined by calculating their grade point averages at the end of each semester. Starting from the end of the second semester, students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 or above are considered "Successful," while those with 1.99 or below are considered "Academically Inadequate." Students who fail a course in the program curriculum must retake that course in the first semester it is offered. A student cannot qualify for graduation until all failed courses are completed, even if all other graduation requirements have been met.

Graduation Requirements
In accordance with “Madde 40” of our University's Undergraduate and Associate Degree Education, Training, and Examination Regulations; a student is entitled to receive an Associate Degree diploma from the relevant program provided that they successfully complete all courses in the curriculum, achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, and complete a total of at least 120 ECTS credits.
Transition to Higher Degree Programs
Graduates of the Opticianry Program have the opportunity to transfer to undergraduate programs announced by ÖSYM through the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS).
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Our graduates may serve as technicians or responsible managers in public and private institutions related to opticianry, or they may establish and operate their own independent optical retail stores.
